Apple is working on two new iPhone, a fourth-generation model and another designed for a CDMA network. CDMA network is rarely used outside the U.S. – some Asian countries that use CDMA network such as Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea. However, in the U.S. CDMA is used by Verizon carrier. It supports the nation’s largest wireless network. Beside Verizon, Sprint also uses CDMA netwrok.

The CDMA device will be produced in September this year. This new model could be designed for Verizon Wireless (owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC) as the carrier. If that’s true, this would immediately give Apple access to about 80 million new users.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. manufactures the current GSM version of iPhone. The CDMA iPhone model is being made by Pegatron Technology Corp. This company is a subsidiary of Taiwan’s ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

CDMA technology is patented by Qualcomm Inc., thus iPhone CDMA version will use Qualcomm chips. By running CDMA technology, iPhone CDMA would use EVDO for its high speed internet access (a.k.a 3G in GSM technology).
